TOPIC: YS 4.17 An object remains known or unknown according to the conditioning or expectation of the consciousness. — B.K.S. Iyengar
This sutra embodies how Guruji studied the sheaths of the body more profoundly than anyone. Often, when he was teaching, he would say, “Why do you not think like that?” Our biases and prejudices lead us to seeing the same object differently or not at all. The knowledge of the object can be superficial or deep. Let’s go to the unknown and have fun while diving in!
Lois Steinberg, Ph.D., CIYT, C-IAYT, is the director of Iyengar Yoga Champaign-Urbana. She has taught since 1978. After five years of using B.K.S. Iyengar's book "Light on Yoga" and study with first generation Iyengar teachers, Lois traveled to Pune, India, in 1983 to study with B.K.S. Iyengar marking the beginning of a relationship with the Iyengar family that still continues. Through her study with the Iyengars, Lois has learned to embody the classical practices of asana and pranayama and also to help students suffering from an array of health issues. Lois is a teacher of teachers and trains teachers in yoga therapeutics. Lois served on the board of the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the US, working on its research and certification committees. She is an assessor for IYNAUS. She has authored scientific publications on yoga therapeutics, numerous other articles, and five Iyengar Yoga therapy books.
